White gold engagement ring: From tradition to fashion

Engagement rings, especially diamond engagement rings are traditionally made of white coloured metals such as platinum or sterling silver that is why they were called white jewels.

The reason for this is that until the 1970’s the technological developments could not allow to set gemstones securely in 14K, at that time only yellow colour gold alloys. The softness and ‘lubricity’ of sterling silver and platinum made it possible to set gemstones safely. Gemstones, depending on the style of setting are put in the jewel by milling or engraving into the metal by the gemstone setting professional. After putting the stones into their places, the previously prepared metal parts are worked on the gemstones. If the place of the gemstone is not well prepared or it not worked on with the right tools, it can easily lead to the damaging of the gemstone when it is set into a header material, a piece of the stone might chip. After any kind of damage stone might lose its entire value.

Nowadays, thanks to the technological development, there is no obstacle setting gemstones into harder metals like 14K white gold. It has an important benefit to set gemstones into harder metals because the risk of the deterioration of the claws or losing the gemstone.

White gold is the most popular gold alloy nowadays; it is not a coincidence because of it beautiful appearance which goes well with any colourful gemstones.

It is good to know about white gold that the basic material of the alloy is pure gold which is yellow, so the white gold alloys always have a yellowish hue which can only be truly seen if the white gold jewels is placed on a sheet of paper. That is why it is common to cover it with rhodium with a galvanization method. This method makes the metal completely white and can cover the yellowish hue of the white gold.
