Gemstone cutting is a unique occupation, a draughtsmanship; it requires great knowledge, gemmological knowledge and a huge mechanical background as well. The gemstones can be divided into two main categories, faceted and cabochon cut. In case of faceted cut there are flat, burnished and polished plates, facets are formed which are responsible for the stone’s glittering. With the cabochon cut, the gemstones are rounded. Organic Gemstones

The organic gemstones is an interesting category, gemstones which are in this category cannot be classically called gemstones. Organic gemstones are of animalistic and floral origins.

And what are these? Different kind of pearls, corals, animal teeth for example elephant bone, shark tooth, amber anything that is fossilized, like resin.

These natural formations got in to the family of gemstones because the jewellery industry uses them. Here in our Atelier, we use different types of pearls and shark or other animal teeth for making jewellery.

The Pearls

Pearls can be divided into two big categories according to the geographical location of their shells. The less valuable pearls are the sweet water pearls and more valuable ones are the salt water pearls.

Using pearls in jewellery, according to archaeological evidence has a history of more than 2000 years, in the ancient Greek culture they called it the tears of Aphrodite.Gyöngyös gyűrűk

Pearls that are created naturally are usually structureless, a piece of contamination gets inside the shell and the shell creates a hard, calcic hull around it. That is why perfectly round pearls are very rare and their values are very high.

That is the reason why people try to breed pearl shells artificially for decades in plantations and because of the considerable fishing. With the artificial method the pearl is being formed in a round shape, the shell creates a nice and glittering material called the lustre.

The real breakthrough in manufacturing pearls happened in 1905 when a Japanese scientist Kokcohi Mikimoto developed a procedure where he could create round pearls effectively. In 1962 French Polynesia joined the pearl growing network. We can thank the unique, dark colour Tahiti pearls to this method.

Shark Tooth

Cápafog medál

The shark teeth just like every other animal teeth and claws are the most ancient natural formation that is used for jewellery. These jewelleries are the symbol of power, combat successes and victory from the birth of mankind. These animalistic fossils were worn on leather strings by predatory men, to show the number of preys. Also, owning these animal’s spirits was great power.

Nowadays, it is a popular type of jewellery for men, especially for necklaces. Shark teeth which are used in our jewellery are from reservations where they collect teeth which are falling out naturally. This is because the big white sharks just like other sharks are endangered.
