Gold necklaces, pendants, chains: Jewellery worn around the neck

The cult of wearing necklaces goes back in time the longest in history, since these are the most striking pieces of jewellery apart from crowns and diadems.

Necklaces and jewelleries worn around the neck are those pieces which were found by archaeologists way back, proof that they were worn by people. The first artefact is from 50000 B.C. from Africa. Necklaces made of floral fibres, necklaces with pearls or clay balls stitched on leather stripes, this goes back to ancient times but it still appears nowadays in tribal cultures.

In the beginning of the metal age, people started to use metal to make necklaces, the first metal artefact was found in the domiciles of the Etruskans and Greek civilizations. In Europe, the first metal necklace artefact was found in 400 A.C., they most likely belonged to barbaric tribes worn as amulets. Necklaces made of noble metals just like other types of jewellery appeared in the medieval times around the 1300s which were worn in the spirit of fashion in the Renaissance era.

Nowadays there are 4 types of jewellery worn around the neck: necklace, pendant, collier and carcanet. What are these exactly? Necklace is one of the most well-known types of jewellery; it consists of chain links, hanging slightly down to the chest from around the neck. The chain links can be completely identical but can be different as well. If the links are different, they usually consist of repeating sections. Pendants are on the necklaces, they can slide back and forth, can be taken off the necklace. They are usually decorated with a gemstone, sometimes they can be opened and hold an amulet with a photograph in it. The collier is similar to pendants with an important difference, that the pendant is soldered to the chain, it compliment the chain towards the centre of the chest, so this pendant cannot be taken off the chain. The carcanet is the most decorated piece out of the four types. It can be adorned all around, can be completely stiff or personalized, a perfectly joint piece for special occasions.
